Buying guide

How to choose a desk that fits.

Get your two numbers

A standing desk has to reach two heights: your sitting desk height (elbows level with the desk while seated) and your standing one. The desk height calculator gives you both from your height.

Check the range

The lowest setting must reach your sitting number and the highest your standing number. Shorter people should watch the minimum; taller people the maximum.

Match the motor to the load

Single motors suit a laptop or one monitor. Dual motors lift more, run quieter and wobble less, which matters with two or three monitors or at full height.

Pick the size last

Measure your space, leave room to roll your chair back, and choose 55–60″ wide for two monitors. 30″ deep keeps a big screen at arm’s length.

Questions

What height range do I need in a standing desk?

The lowest setting should reach your sitting desk height and the highest should reach your standing desk height. For someone 5′9″ that’s about 26.5″ and 42.5″. Our desk height calculator works out both for you.

Single or dual motor?

Single motors are fine for a laptop or one monitor. For two or more monitors, or if you’re tall and use the desk near full height, dual motors lift more and wobble less.

What about desk converters?

A converter sits on your existing desk and raises your keyboard and screen. It’s cheaper, but your sitting height stays whatever your current desk is.
